How Long Does Waxing Last?

How long does waxing last? If you've been asking this question, this guide's for you! Find out what to expect, how long waxing lasts, and how to maximize your results...

Whether you’re new to waxing or just curious about whether your results are typical, it’s normal to wonder how long you can expect to enjoy silky-smooth skin after a wax.

Many factors affect your treatment's longevity, and you can do a few things to get the most out of every appointment. Join us for everything you need to know about the average waxing timeline and how to enjoy hair-free skin for longer.

What factors affect how long waxing lasts?

While everyone’s results vary, here are several elements to keep in mind when it comes to how long your smooth skin will last after waxing:

Wax type

When it comes to hard vs soft wax, one doesn’t necessarily offer longer-lasting results. However, using the right wax for the right treatment area will make a difference. It’s also important to note that hard wax can grasp fine hairs more easily, so you may notice a distinction between these applications.

Area waxed

The hair in each area of your body grows at a different rate. For example, those delicate, fuzzy hairs on your upper lip will return relatively quickly after hair removal, while the hairs on your arms and legs take more time to reach the minimum waxing length of a quarter-inch long.

Skin care practices

Certain practices, such as regular exfoliation, can ensure better results from your waxing appointments since they prime the skin for treatment and allow the wax to grip each hair more effectively.

Hair growth cycle

Hormone levels, genetics, and lifestyle factors all affect your hair growth cycle. Unfortunately, some people simply require more frequent waxing appointments than others, as their hair grows back more quickly.

How to maximize body waxing results

While you can’t do much about your genetics, there are a few ways you can extend the results of your waxing sessions to get the most bang for your buck:

Keep skin exfoliated

Sloughing off dead skin cells from your chosen treatment areas will help the wax grab onto your hairs rather than dry flakes. In turn, more strands will come out cleanly from the root with each pull.

Additionally, this practice will help you prevent painful ingrown hairs. For the best results, exfoliate regularly between appointments.

Let your hair grow to the right length

If you’re used to shaving every few days, sitting back and watching your unwanted body hair grow can be a challenge. However, it’s a necessary step to avoid breakage.

Be sure to let your strands reach at least a quarter of an inch long before your next appointment. While shaving between waxes may be tempting, it will only reduce the quality of your next waxing session.

Stay on a consistent waxing schedule

Regular waxes offer a ton of benefits, including slower hair regrowth. Beginners are often disappointed to see fresh strands appear within a few days of their first waxing appointments. But that happens because wax can’t remove hairs that are just beneath the skin’s surface.

As you maintain a consistent waxing routine, your hair growth cycle will sync up, and you’ll see less of this rapid regrowth. Additionally, some damage to your hair follicles is expected. When this happens, you likely won’t see new hairs emerge from that follicle.

Follow waxing aftercare instructions

Your waxing specialist will give you specific instructions for proper waxing aftercare. They might suggest avoiding sun exposure and offer guidance on which products to use and when to start exfoliating.

Following these guidelines will help you recover quickly and enjoy that post-wax glow without negative side effects like inflammation and ingrown hairs.

How often should you get waxed for best results?

You already know that your hair growth rate varies in different parts of your body, but what’s the average time between waxes? We’ve got you covered!

For larger areas

Bigger treatment areas like your back, chest, arms, and legs usually require appointments every four to six weeks as these strands grow slowly compared to those in other spots.

For facial waxing

The hair on your face will generally grow more quickly than the hair in other areas. You can expect regular waxing appointments every two to four weeks to keep your upper lip, cheeks, and eyebrows nice and tidy.

For bikini and Brazilian waxing

Thick hairs like those along the bikini line and underarms will typically need to be waxed every three to four weeks. Remember, your hair will grow back finer, thinner, and at a slower rate as you establish a routine waxing schedule.

Once your growth cycles sync up, you might be able to maintain smooth, supple skin with appointments every six weeks.
