How did you know what your niche is, and how did you find your ideal clients?

My niche really developed naturally over time. When I first started, I wanted to do everything and work with everyone. As I gained experience, I started paying attention to the services I genuinely loved doing and the clients I loved working with.

A big part of finding my ideal clients was simply becoming more confident in who I was as a business owner. I started creating content that spoke directly to the type of client I wanted to attract instead of trying to make everyone happy. The more authentic I became, the more aligned my clientele became.

You’ve built a thriving solo practice, how do the products you chose to use in your treatment room help enhance your services and support the growth of your business?

I’m really intentional about the products and modalities I bring into my business. I want everything I use to have a purpose and help me get better results for my clients.

Retail has become a huge part of my business, and I think that’s because I don’t approach it as “selling products.” I’m recommending the products I genuinely believe my clients need to maintain the results we’ve worked for together. When you have the right products, education and client experience, retail becomes a natural extension of your services.

What inspired you to start teaching and mentoring other beauty pros alongside running your own practice? And what’s one piece of advice you find yourself giving them over and over again?

I started mentoring because it’s very overwhelming to figure out the business side of this industry on your own. I desire to be someone that others can come to for guidance and help in their own journeys.

Once I had built a business that was genuinely successful, I realized I had learned so many lessons that could have saved another esthetician years of trial and error.

The advice I probably give the most is: stop thinking like a service provider and start thinking like a business owner. You can be an amazing esthetician and still have a struggling business if you don’t understand the business behind your hands-on work.

What does “success” look like to you now, compared to when you first started?

When I first started, success was being busy, having “more”, and increasing my revenue each year. I thought if my books were full and my numbers constantly increased, I was successful.

Success to me now is having a profitable business that supports the life I actually want. It’s being able to make good money without sacrificing all of your time. It’s having systems, boundaries, savings and investments in place and knowing exactly where my money is going.

It’s also is having the freedom to choose. Choosing how much I work, who I work with, what services I offer and what direction I want my business to go.

Outside of the treatment room, what keeps you inspired and recharged?

I love being home, spending time with my husband and daughter, reading, binging my shows and having quiet time. I’m naturally pretty introverted, so I really value having time where I don’t have to be “on.”

I also love learning. I’m constantly reading, researching or thinking about business, finances and ways I can improve what I’m doing. (That’s the Ravenclaw in me for those who recognize Hogwarts houses.)

What resources, mentors, or experiences helped you better understand the backend side of running a business?

I’ve learned through years of trial and error, working with bookkeepers and other professionals, researching finances and taxes, studying successful businesses, making mistakes and figuring out what I would do differently the next time.

One of the biggest turning points for me was realizing that I couldn’t treat my business like a hobby just because I was a solo provider. Learning about business finances, paying myself properly, taxes, profit, retirement and investing completely changed the way I looked at my business.

The best resource is the community you create and the people you surround yourself with. My industry peers have taught me a lot! Building a genuine community both in person and on social media so you stay connected, immersed and inspired.
