Interview with Jalen Ventrone
7-Year Esthetician | Raleigh, NC
@raleighwaxologist
Q: How long have you been a licensed esthetician, and where are you from?
A: I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 2018. I am originally from Michigan and moved to NC in 2018.

Q: You offer an incredible variety of services, from nails to facials, and full body waxing. What led you to specialize in all three?
A: I knew with cosmetology I had a variety of options to explore, so I started with hair and that industry was not for me. I then found myself mastering full-body soft wax for the last seven years.
When I started taking my nail journey seriously I wasn’t sure what would happen with it. I was still managing a waxing franchise and kind of had to keep my nails on the down low, but I was looking for something more—so nails was and somewhat still is a ‘side hustle.’ It keeps my creative juices flowing.
As for facials, that is my newest adventure. In cosmetology school, you could always find me in the spa room, but I didn’t think I would be offering that in my space. As I’ve focused more on holistic products both in the salon and in my personal life, I’ve come to realize more people need truly good products on their skin—so now we offer holistic facials.

Q: When it comes to waxing, what’s one common myth you wish more clients understood?
A: That soft wax hurts more than any other waxing service… That the hair will grow back thicker… That you can’t do a full Brazilian with just soft wax…

Q: What’s something you’ve learned about yourself through running your own business?
A: That I LOVE working alone, and simply collaborating with others on things. Also, it's okay to be picky.

Q: What’s one self-care tip you always encourage your clients to adopt at home?
A: Use a sea salt–based exfoliant 2–3 times a week on your bikini and underarms, and your full body at least once a week.
